Julie: [00:00:00] Welcome to the SpaHive. I'm Julie Pankey, your host for today's show. In the SpaHive, we are dishing up killer industry buzz, tactical business insights and grass roots, inspiration. I promise our conversations will always be real raw, honest, and sometimes messy with experts from across. It's a globe meant to show you how to find your own joy, your own divine purpose, and the power of your spirit animal in the SpaHive.

[00:00:42] I can help you have it all the business and life of your dreams. Join me on this wild ride.

[00:00:50] Welcome Gael. I'm so excited today to be with Gael Wood. I can't wait for you to meet her, hear all about what she's been doing specifically for the spa industry, as well as massage therapists and practitioners and helping them grow their business and have resources that they need.

[00:01:14] I'm so excited to have met Gael online, and I've been following all of the amazing things that she's doing to help our industry with resources and wanted to introduce her and bring you Gail and bring her into our SpaHive audience. So welcome Gael. Thank you so much for joining us.

[00:01:36] Gael: [00:01:36] Well, thank you for having me.

[00:01:37] I'm excited to be here. I always love to talk about marketing and business and all my favorite things.

[00:01:45] Julie: [00:01:45] Awesome. So Gael, tell us a little bit about you, how you got into the business, how you got to the place where you are today, the shifts that you made to get to the point to really help businesses specifically, with marketing.

[00:02:03] Let's introduce you to our audience this morning.

[00:02:06] Gael: [00:02:06] Okay. Thank you so much. I went to massage school when I was 19 and now I'm 46. So I haven't been a part of this industry for many years and seen a lot of changes. And the way I got started is I was working at a bed and breakfast. I was doing housekeeping, cooking, whatever they needed me to do.

[00:02:25] I love my job there, but I knew it. Wasn't what I wanted to do for my entire life. And I would see the massage therapist coming up with their massage tables and I knew they were making a lot more money than I was making. One day. One of them asked me if I would come and clean her house in exchange for a massage.

[00:02:45] And I thought, sure, why not? I always want to try new things. And that was kind of the turning point for me. I got that massage in her beautiful massage area with the music playing and the yummy smelling oils. And I had never experienced anything like that before.

[00:03:02] Julie: [00:03:02] Now that's a way to get into our industry through experiencing a massage.

[00:03:09] I love it.

[00:03:11] Gael: [00:03:11] And it kind of just planted a seed. I didn't immediately go out and find a massage school, but in the back of my mind, I was like, that is definitely something I could do. So it was kind of on my list. I was also thinking about chef school, but a couple months later as life does with synchronicities and things like that, I had gotten, done doing a hike and I decided, and I did not hitchhike regularly, but I decided to hitchhike back to my car.

[00:03:37] Because I had hiked eight miles and I've got a young lady who I kind of knew. She was friend of a friend who had just gotten back from massage school. And she told me where she went. I called the school like the next day, got the catalog and started my plan to go to massage school. So I left about six months after that.

[00:03:57] Julie: [00:03:57] That's amazing. So I feel like they were signs. Right. I feel like there were different signs that kind of. Pushed you in this certain direction. I mean, did you feel it yourself?

[00:04:13] Gael: [00:04:13] Oh yeah, definitely. And the other thing was, I had just started kind of getting into some personal development and some different spiritual teachings and I've been reading the works of Edgar Casey.

[00:04:26] I don't know if you've heard of him, but he had a massage school and a healing holistic hospital in Virginia Beach. Well, that just happened to be the school that she had gone to. I didn't even know there was a school. I didn't know. There was some place you could go and learn more about Edgar Casey and all of his work.

[00:04:45] If those little nudges inspirations, cause I could have said, I don't want to clean a house for four hours in exchange for a one hour massage.

[00:04:54] Julie: [00:04:54] Right? Exactly. It's like a series of decisions that we make that lead us to this certain point, right?

[00:05:03] Gael: [00:05:03] Yeah. Yeah. And that's one thing I always encouraged people to do, especially when we start talking in a few minutes about business and marketing is, don't block your.

[00:05:11] Energy. Don't close yourself off from opportunities, like be open and try things because you never know where something's going to lead you. We often don't get the results we want or expect, but it leads us in a whole new direction.

[00:05:26] Julie: [00:05:26] Right? So you went to massage school, you became a massage therapist, and I imagine you found that to be super fulfilling.

[00:05:37] How did you get to the point where you are today really helping massage therapists market themselves better?

[00:05:46] Gael: [00:05:46] Well, I loved massage and I was absolutely had no idea how to find clients or get clients. So I ended up going back to my old job at the bed and breakfast and they gave me an offer. I could not refuse.

[00:06:00] They said, if you come back here and do your old job, you can have all the massage clients so afternoon and evenings, I could see massage clients there. And it was a really good opportunity for me to kind of build up my skills, without having to worry about the marketing. So I did that for about two years, but it was seasonal and I wanted to do more of my own thing.

[00:06:21] But through that, I really started to figure out what I didn't know. So one of the most important things we can learn is what we don't know. Right. So I was like, well, I want to own a business, but in order to do that, I've got to learn about business. I've got to learn about marketing. And so just kind of figuring out what, I didn't know.

[00:06:40] I went a few different directions. I actually decided to go back to school and pursue a business degree, but I only lasted one semester because I do not love school. I love learning. I do not like,

[00:06:51] Julie: [00:06:51] yeah. Yeah. I can relate to that.

[00:06:53]Gael: [00:06:53] I was working by that time. I was working at a day spa. And I was seeing the aestheticians and how they were so good at selling products and rebooking their clients.

[00:07:04] And I asked my boss, I said, how do you rebook a client? And she looked at me like I was a complete,

[00:07:13] no, you just ask them to rebook, but I was so shy. And it was just such a, not a part of my upbringing to sell or ask people to spend money with me. It just wasn't something that had really ever occurred to me. And so I thought, well, okay, well, that's what she said. That's what I'll try. And I started asking every single client to reschedule and suddenly about 25 to 40% of my clients would reschedule with me just with that simple thing.

[00:07:41] But we often, we go to school thinking it's one thing. And when we get out there, A hundred other skills we need to grow and develop.

[00:07:49] Julie: [00:07:49] Exactly. And so often I find that when we're hiring staff at various different spots that I work with, that they can have the most amazing technical skills, but they're not necessarily prepared with the business.

[00:08:06] Skills with knowing just what you said exactly about selling retail and rebooking and all of those things. And so it's kind of starting from scratch when you get into a spa and they say to you as a massage therapist, for example, I mean, estheticians know this, but as a massage therapist, will you do to sell retail and part of your job is recommending home care for your client.

[00:08:36] And we have goals and all of a sudden you see them like break out into a cold sweat, when you're talking about setting goals and selling retail. So I think I loved that you were so aware and, really eager to learn and took that lesson from the estheticians. And I think it's talking about.

[00:09:03] If we're hiring a massage therapist, do you have any ideas? What is the dialogue to have, or a good way to find the right therapists that were like you that were eager and wanting to grow and wanting to rebook your clients and understanding the importance of recommending home care and going that extra step.

[00:09:32] Yeah. I mean, would you have any advice to our listeners about finding that person and one step further for our practitioners that are listening? How important that is when you're accepting a job?

[00:09:47] Gael: [00:09:47] Yeah, I think the most important thing is to set that expectation from the beginning. And a lot of times as spa owners, we think it's implied.

[00:09:56] We think, Oh, well, this person knows that's part of their job. So I would say, first of all, don't ever assume anybody knows anything.

[00:10:05] Julie: [00:10:05] I was just thinking that in my head. It's funny. You said that because I said to myself, well, we know what assume does.

[00:10:12] Gael: [00:10:12] Right. Exactly. So set that expectation from the beginning and then take it a step further and don't just tell them what they need to do, but show them how, because I think most people want to succeed and want to do a good job, but we just simply, if you don't have the skills.

[00:10:29]What's common sense and obvious to one person is not common sense and obvious to another person. So just really having a good system of training people and showing them how having these skills will increase their income and just making it a part of your culture, that this is just what we do here.

[00:10:48] I have in my current business, I have it's company policy and my virtual assistants know it. And I'm like, it's a couple company policy where you're always selling. And once you say it's a company policy, that's what we do here. Then I think it's easier. If you just say, like, I always re ask my clients to rebook, then you don't have to, every single time you have a client have this inner battle in your head.

[00:11:09] Should I ask this client to rebook? Is it appropriate to do at this time? What if I say the wrong thing? You just know, well, Oh, that's what I always do.

[00:11:17] Julie: [00:11:17] Right. It's my policy. Whether you're a solo practitioner in your own business, or if you're a practitioner working for a large, spa business, it is your standard practice that you.

[00:11:33] I always ask them to rebook. It's your standard practice that you're always recommending one item for home care that they'll benefit from, and that will extend the benefit of the service. You just performed on that. Yeah. I love that.

[00:11:53] Gael: [00:11:53] I do think we need to give our practitioners a little bit of wiggle room.

[00:11:56] There are exceptions, but I think, yeah, another thing that really helped me was developing a script. And I actually wrote out a little script for myself on what I was going to say to rebook a client. It was simple, actually have, if you go to massage magazine.com and search for my name, I have a long article on it, but it was just, this is what I found was going on with you today.

[00:12:21] So this is what I recommend for your treatments. And this is what I recommend for your home care. And I just used that little script. It was like on a little note card. I kept it in my pocket. Yeah. Until it became natural for me to do it. And then a few weeks, and then it was just a part of my routine.

[00:12:40] Julie: [00:12:40] Right. And I think it's so common and it's okay that our massage therapists and practitioners. Are sometimes, actually more times I feel like they're not introverts is they're not comfortable with a, I don't want to have a massage. And have you talked to me about product the whole time or sell to me the whole time?

[00:13:03] So we all know that then at the end, They're uncomfortable. When is the right time to say this? And so having a script and doing it over and over again, then it just becomes a habit and natural learned behavior. And then you don't feel as uncomfortable anymore.

[00:13:23] Gael: [00:13:23] Yes. And another tip that I absolutely loved.

[00:13:26] I learned this when I had my spa, I was doing some training is to get permission, to make recommendations during the intake. So something like, okay, so you going over their health form or their intake form with them and you kind of tell them, we need you to get on the table and here's what we're going to do.

[00:13:46] And then we'll do your treatment. And then when we get done, I'll make some recommendations. Does that sound okay to you? And of course, they're going to say, yeah, that we're the experts. They want our recommendations. That's the other big aha is realize we're not inconveniencing our clients. We're helping them by giving them our recommendations.

[00:14:05] And it's no different than saying, would you like a cup of tea? Would you like a glass of water? Would you like a new face cleanser? Would you like this product for your sore muscles? We're just. Offering them options,

[00:14:17] Julie: [00:14:17] right? A solution to what they stated really intake is their problem, their issue, their concern.

[00:14:24] And I think I have a client and she was just telling me a few weeks ago that in her intake form, she just has a line that says, are you interested in learning about the products that I used on you today? That's it. And then there's a circle. Yes, no. And if they say yes, She mentions it. And she says that 99% say yes, because there for a reason,

[00:14:51] Gael: [00:14:51] right.

[00:14:52] If you're getting a facial, you like skincare.

[00:14:54] Julie: [00:14:54] Right? Exactly. I love it. These are such great tips, especially for the massage therapist and practitioners that our listeners employ. Most of our listeners are owners. Directors. And then of course we do have solo practitioner owners that listen to the podcast and are always looking for tips to be able to grow their business, get more people coming in, be able to retain more business with the clients that they currently have, how to sell them more.

[00:15:30] Whether it's rebooking, whether it's packages, whether it's home care, getting that client retention. So these are really great tips. So tell me, Gael, what makes you most passionate about our industry?

[00:15:46] Gael: [00:15:46] I think it's  helping to see people in our industry succeed. There's just so much opportunity.

[00:15:52] We're in a, I remember the exact number. I read it a while back, but a couple of billion dollar a year industry. And so I don't think that there's any reason for anyone to be struggling or to be not reaching their goals and having the business that they desire to have. So if you don't, I think it's really just a matter of figuring out.

[00:16:12] You know where the issue is and tweaking things. It may be in your marketing. It may be in your retention. It may be in your average ticket price. But once we look at all those things, we can just keep improving. So it breaks my heart to see people leaving the industry because it was too stressful or they weren't busy enough, or they got burned out.

[00:16:34] It's important for people to have these services available. And I love seeing small businesses succeed, small business owners. Right.

[00:16:42] Julie: [00:16:42] Right. And so let's talk about resources a little bit. What are some of the best resources that you've had over the course of your career that maybe could help others? In their career, what would you consider some of your greatest resources as you've grown over all the years?

[00:17:04] Gael: [00:17:04] So, one

[00:17:04] thing I found very helpful was to expand outside of just industry resources. So one thing I always say is marketing. We have to kind of translate general marketing concepts and information to our industry. But as a massage therapist in a spa owner, I've found so much helpful information buying courses and programs for hairstylists because there wasn't that much.

[00:17:33] When I started out for massage therapy. And so kind of just thinking outside the box and looking at what other industries are doing. I also like to look at what big companies are doing, not to copy them, but if they're doing it, it probably works.

[00:17:50] Julie: [00:17:50] Oh, absolutely. No reason to reinvent the wheel. Right. I think by educating yourself as much as possible, going online, looking at what other spas, big companies, even like what you said, companies outside the industry, some of the biggest trends that hit other industries will then hit our industry, especially, I mean, technology.

[00:18:20] And marketing and social media is a huge example, watching good brands and what they do and not copying, but emulating and getting ideas that will kind of inspire you and how you can make it your own in your own business. When you're doing. Instagram live or a Facebook post or an email blast.

[00:18:47] Gael: [00:18:47] Yeah. And one of the biggest reasons we don't do those things is we get stuck.

[00:18:52] We're like, well, what do I talk about? What do I put in my newsletter? What do I talk about on social media? And if you look at, I don't know, let's see. Like Toyota or something like that. They always have something going on to talk about. They always have like a, they latch on to national holidays and they make up their own stuff like Toyotathon.

[00:19:11] So they always have something to talk about to their customer base. So I think we can take something like that and say, well, I could do a monthly special. Then every month I have something new to talk about and just, or each month you could have a monthly theme. That's something I encourage people to do, throughout my marquee classes is just think through your year and kind of plan out some themes and some things that you can work with to create your marketing content and stay in front of your clients and have reasons to reach out.

[00:19:42] Julie: [00:19:42] Right. Right, exactly. And I feel like we were just talking about this. One of your greatest resources is your mailing list.

[00:19:51] Gael: [00:19:51] Yes, definitely. I'm experiencing that more and more just in my own business. This is something that's been going through my head just this week is looking at. Social media is great. I think it's a good tool, but we don't want to put all of our eggs in any basket.

[00:20:08] And our mailing list is ours. The same as our website is ours. We own that. Nobody's going to ban us from our own mail.

[00:20:19] Julie: [00:20:19] You are not going to go to Facebook jail. When that's when I always say, well, when you're using your own mailing lists, you have a lot more control over it than you do on some of these other platforms. So Gael, tell me about the resources that you provide to spa owners and practitioners and what are the things that you're working on now?

[00:20:43] And resources that you can provide to help, make people's lives easier.

[00:20:49] Gael: [00:20:49] Well, on my website, massageandspasuccess.com, I have over a hundred blog posts that you can check out with all different kinds of. Mindset strategies and marketing tips. And just, I think reading through those blog posts would help anybody to maybe look at things a little bit differently, get some new ideas.

[00:21:10] I also have a collection of home study courses, everything from doing spa services, to marketing, to rebooking clients, lots of the things that we've talked about here today, even creating your marketing materials. And then about five years ago, I was teaching my. Marketing bootcamp, which is kind of, it's a six week program.

[00:21:33] That's now available as homestudy. And it's really foundational, just to get all of your, what I call your four pillars of marketing, organized and optimized. So your website. Your printed marketing materials, your social media presence and your local networking, which I feel like if you have all four of those going for you, you'll definitely have enough clients coming in.

[00:21:55] And then whichever one you liked the best you can spend more time on. But I think having all four in place is. Pretty necessary for a business owner. Well, all of my boot camp students were saying, I want to do the things you're saying to do. I want to send newsletters. I want to post on social media regularly, but I don't have time to create all of this content.

[00:22:15] And it's a lot to, what do you write a newsletter article about? Maybe you're not good at graphic design. So I created my marketing content clubs, and I ran those for five years. Every month, I would put out a fresh package of marketing content. I recently closed the ongoing subscription and bundled everything into one big package.

[00:22:35] So it's one to three years worth of marketing content, depending on how you use it. So I'm excited about that.

[00:22:43] Julie: [00:22:43] Wow. That sounds like an amazing resource. Don't worry. You as Gail talking, you didn't have to worry about jotting down all the notes in our show notes. We'll be sure to give you a link to Gael's website so that you can access all the blogs.

[00:23:01] Plus all the information that she's been talking about as well as a link to the article in massage magazine.com that how to develop a script and sell more and recommend more. So. Not to worry. Just enjoy listening to all the little tidbits of golden nuggets that Gael is sharing with us today. And then hop down to the show notes and you'll have access to reach out to Gael directly.

[00:23:35] Check out her website, check out her blogs. Check out her articles that she's contributed to and written in the past, so that you'll be able to learn more about all of the tips that Gael has given us today. Gael tell me, let's get in a little more, not personally, but. Talking about resources. I love to know if there are any great books that you've read lately that you would recommend as a resource.

[00:24:06] Someone once told me recently that we should have a spa book club and that we should recommend books to each other. That we've been reading that we've either found it.or helpful. Sometimes it's just a book for sale it's care that takes our mind off everything. And we can, have a mini vacation while we're reading it.

[00:24:27] It doesn't always have to be a self-help business book, but is there any great books that you've read lately? And of course, since we're a podcast, do you listen to any fantastic podcasts that people might enjoy?

[00:24:40] Gael: [00:24:40] Well, let's start with books. So I listened to a lot of audio books. It's one of my favorite ways to get my reading in as walking and listening.

[00:24:49] So anything by Dr. Wayne Dyer, I love because he kind of will take me out of my thinking mind and my ego and get me recentered with that. It's all. Okay. And.

[00:25:04] Julie: [00:25:04] I love his books as well. Absolutely. I'm a hundred percent with you on that.

[00:25:10] Gael: [00:25:10] And I love his voice too. On his audio books. My son said one time we had just moved and I was having to drive him back to his old school, which was quite far away.

[00:25:19] And I was listening to Dr. Wayne Dyer in the mornings on the drive, and he would say, mama, will you put on that man who makes me go to sleep?

[00:25:31] And then on the flip side, I love business books and one of the most helpful books I've ever read to get me. Yeah. And the mindset writing my newsletters and writing sales pages and things is called Cashvertising. And I don't know the author's name right off hand, but I'll send it to you to add to the show notes.

[00:25:50] Julie: [00:25:50] Yes, absolutely. And I can look it up as well, but I'll have kale make sure that I get the right one and we'll put it in the show notes. So of course, most people have heard of Dr. Wayne Dyer, but we'll drop a link to some of his books and I've enjoyed a lot of his books over the course of the years. I feel like I should have stock and hay house.

[00:26:14]All of the books that they put out seem to be super helpful. And then cash for typing. Sounds super interesting. I haven't heard that one myself, so I always hear great books on the podcast and I'm looking over at my bookshelf and I have like three new books that I haven't cracked open yet that I have gotten recommendations from our podcast guests.

[00:26:39] So I think I'll have some good summer reading. So. Thanks for those tips. And do you listen to podcasts when you're walking? Do you have any that you love?

[00:26:50] Gael: [00:26:50] I don't listen to a lot of podcasts. I will be honest with you between all of the online courses that I take audio books. I do. I'm like, I just don't have time to fit in podcasts.

[00:27:03] So I know there's a lot of good ones out there, but I don't, it's not really my thing. I love to be on podcasts.

[00:27:15] Julie: [00:27:15] Well, if you're listening to it, the SpaHive podcast, the podcast that you need today, because we have Gael and she's given us some great pearls of wisdom today.

[00:27:26] Gael: [00:27:26] So my one love of hay house, the hay house app is amazing.

[00:27:33] Julie: [00:27:33] Oh, I haven't downloaded the Hayhouse app.

[00:27:36] Gael: [00:27:36] So $5 a month and there's hundreds of books and courses on there.

[00:27:41] Julie: [00:27:41] Hey, that's amazing. Now I have some takeaways from our podcast today, so I'm going to download the hay house app and also can't wait to look up this cash for . I love the sound of it. It just makes me feel really excited. And I feel like our listeners we're always looking. For ways to promote our business.

[00:28:04] And I sounds like this could be a great resource. So my one last question she, Gael is if you had advice for your younger self, what do you know now that you wished you knew then?

[00:28:20] Gael: [00:28:20] Definitely just to go for it more and not to overthink things so much.

[00:28:26] Julie: [00:28:26] I love it. Yeah, it was so great talking to you. And I think that you've given some really great tips for, not only the solo practitioners, massage therapists, aestheticians, et cetera, working on their own also for the spa owners and spa directors that manage them.

[00:28:50] And being able to help give them a little bit more insight, give them more tips and tools so that they can be the best that they can be. And I love that. But owner director really truly invest. So the time to get to know their therapists and their providers, and what's important to them. I think that we'll see them succeed and they want, all of us want to succeed.

[00:29:19] We all want to go into a job doing a great job. And for the people that you know, are growing their own practices and feeling overwhelmed, trying to do everything, see clients, do your marketing, keep everything clean. Do your book, keeping. I think that you've given them some bite-sized tips that they can start simply and giving them some resources and a place to start so that they can kind of take step-by-step baby steps to the point really being able to grow their businesses and gain more awareness.

[00:29:59] However, they like however big or small steps suits their lifestyle.

[00:30:05] Gael: [00:30:05] Yeah, I think with the spot owners and the massage therapist, I think everybody has the same goals. It's just different ways of thinking about it. So honestly, it's communication.

[00:30:16] Julie: [00:30:16] Right. And if you had one final tip for our listeners, can you think of what that would be?

[00:30:22] Gael: [00:30:22] Yeah, I think so. One of the biggest things that changed how I went about my business was to always say what I would say. If there were not money involved. So when it comes to making recommendations to your clients, a lot of times we'll add money into the equation and we'll think, Oh, they're going to think I'm just trying to make more money.

[00:30:45] So I took money out of the equation and said, I'm always going to recommend what I think is the best case scenario for this person. As if there's no money involved. And that to me just gave me, it changed everything really. So that may be a tip that some people need and some people don't, but I think a lot of us, we have little hangups about money.

[00:31:08] I think we all do. So just setting that aside and saying, I'm going to do. What I would do if I knew this person was like a multimillionaire,

[00:31:17] Julie: [00:31:17] right. And I think, one of the top tips I always have for selling retail is don't sell from your own pocket book. You can't assume that someone can or cannot afford something, but I like the way that you said it better.

[00:31:32] And I even wrote this down because I'm going to add some tips to our show notes that I wrote down that I thought were some real great tips. That will add to the show notes, but I think that this is you say it even better than don't sell from your own pocket book is say what you would say as if there was no money involved.

[00:31:55] I love it. Like everything was free or every person you worked on was a multimillionaire. How would your conversation be different? And I think what I say is similar, but it's looking at it at a slightly different way. And. I love it because all of a sudden, a light bulb goes on in your like. Right. If I was offering this amazing CBD balm and it was free, would I give it to every single person that walked in the door?

[00:32:27] Yeah. Because I love that. I think it's amazing, but you know, it's $54, so maybe. You don't recommend it to every person, even though you think that they need it. So I think that was one of the greatest things. And I love the way that you said it, which makes all the difference. Say what you would say as if there was no money involved.

[00:32:50] Gael: [00:32:50] And I'm always surprised, the people I think would spend a lot of money sometimes don't and the people that probably might not, maybe these people can't afford it. There's so many that your biggest spinners and there'll be some of your best customers because you took the time and effort to offer it to them.

[00:33:07] Right. Right.
