Julie: [00:00:00] Welcome to the SpaHive. I'm Julie Pankey, your host for today's show. In the SpaHive, we are dishing up killer industry buzz, tactical business insights and grass roots, inspiration. I promise our conversations will always be real raw, honest, and sometimes messy with experts from across. It's a globe meant to show you how to find your own joy, your own divine purpose, and the power of your spirit animal in the SpaHive.
[00:00:42] I can help you have it all the business and life of your dreams. Join me on this wild ride. Welcome Jaclyn. I am so excited that you took some time out of your day today to join us here, live in the spa hive. It's always such a pleasure talking to you. So I'm really excited to have a conversation about what you're doing.
[00:01:12] What you're working on, what you're doing to help push our industry forward and educate people. And we always have such a great time chatting together. So I wanted to have you introduce yourself to our audience. And tell them a little bit about your backstory, how you came to the place you are today and what you're most passionate about with our industry.
[00:01:42] So Jaclyn and I have known each other for a long time. Welcome Jaclyn.
[00:01:48] Jaclyn: [00:01:48] Thank you so much, Julie. And I want to start off by congratulating you on doing a podcast. I feel like there is such a demand and a need for this for us to all stay connected, to hear something inspirational. And I really admire you for doing this because not only.
[00:02:07] Does the industry need this, but I just think we need this as humans. It's another way for us all to stay connected, especially during times like this, and I'm really excited and honored a part of it. So thank you. You're right. We've known each other a long time. I want to say close to maybe 18 or so years, which is amazing.
[00:02:28]I've been in. Right time flies. Look how quickly a year went by loved being part of SpaHive, but just thinking back to how we met and how we've grown. I have been part of the beauty industry for 22 years. This is all I know. So you asked the question, what am I most passionate about when I had my first facial, when I was 11 years old.
[00:02:51] I felt the environment. And I remember sitting up and saying, I'm going to do this when I grow up. It just, it felt right. And it felt right to, connect with the right people as we've grown and certainly passionate about sales and training and beauty products. And my trajectory has not been what I thought it was going to be when I first started in this industry.
[00:03:13] It's just. Evolved as times evolve and we pivot and I've loved the sales aspect of it. I've been in trainings and really more on the business kind of vendor side. And I love helping other businesses, but I'd say outside of even taking my. Five professional hat off. I love supporting other women really being part of that dynamic and positivity.
[00:03:35] And I think that can be relevant to anything that we're all doing. Whether it is spa or work related, but that, we are positive. We're a support system we're encouraging and never know dream is too big. So. That's what brought us here, really think about our story of working together with a distributor.
[00:03:55] And again, it was on the manufacturer and kind of vendor side, and we all stay connected in that way. It's just, it's such a. Small knit kind of group that community that we all do help each other when we can, even if a year goes by or two years, when we see each other it's as if we just pick off right where we left off.
[00:04:13] So that's what the joy is about this industry and how we all are connected.
[00:04:18] Julie: [00:04:18] That's amazing. Now, Jaclyn, you're a licensed esthetician, right?
[00:04:22] Jaclyn: [00:04:22] Correct. So I got my license back 22 years ago. I also am a licensed instructor for the state of Massachusetts. I dabbled in teaching aesthetics and teaching sales specifically and preparing the next generation of best dietician to be ready for the real world of beauty industry wellness industry.
[00:04:41]And I'm really proud of that. Every time I connect with. Someone that was my student. And I see that they've opened a business or I've seen their success. It's it definitely warms my heart and it happens often. So it's amazing how this industry can really create economic independence for so many.
[00:05:00] Right and people
[00:05:02] Julie: [00:05:02] that are listening to the podcast.
[00:05:04] It's so varied because we have solo practitioners. We have business owners, spawn directors, vendor resource partners. And so I think it's really important for people to know that it's okay if you get in the industry and you think your path is going to be one thing and you just grow and change and things continue to Expand . And so I think you're a great person that has lived your passion in various different areas as an institution, as an instructor, as a vendor partner, and you speak to a little bit about how that came about and how you just continued to grow. Still continue to grow and learn and evolve.
[00:05:54] Jaclyn: [00:05:54] Sure. So I know, I remember even signing up for aesthetics school.
[00:05:58] I thought I would end up in a med spa. That was the hype at the time. That was when sort of the more advanced services were just coming arise. And I really thought that was going to be my path. I am glad that I stayed. Open-minded not just through school, but also. When I was seeking my first job and I was an esthetician in the treatment room for a bit.
[00:06:19] And it's interesting that I found a sales job and it was out of a distributor in Newburyport at the time. And I realized how moved it was for me to transition from selling in the treatment room to selling business to business, because I had that experience. And there's always been an underlying passion I had, or just focus that may have been pretty niche back then.
[00:06:46] And it isn't as much now, but conscious beauty, clean beauty, natural products, that's always been a little part of something that I do. And currently I work for a vegan cosmetic brand. And prior to that, I worked for another makeup brand. I'm working with a brand called Anamika organic right now, out of Australia.
[00:07:05] And I don't consider myself a makeup artist in the artistry. Typical sense. I feel really strongly that because I have a skincare background that is in the aesthetic world, that is why ingredients in makeup are so important to me. So I look at it as an extension and I grew to learn that was the way I wanted to go after different brands that I've worked with.
[00:07:29] And the first skincare brand I ever worked with, it was called DB. It was an Italian brand out of bergamot. And I learned from these aestheticians in Italy that, went to school for three years and the, their common denominator as well was selling and getting people on the right routine, getting their clients from the beginning at 14 years old or sometimes even younger.
[00:07:51] And so I learned a lot of that and really made it part of my. Conversations all of the time when I came back to the States and was teaching spas. And so I've taken little bits and pieces from not just mentors, but leaders and people. I really admired that helps me boost me to the next level to say, it's not just about product.
[00:08:14] It's about sales. It's about training. It's about support. It's about relationships. And it just all kind of snowballs from there. And I never would've thought I would've written a book. I never, I may have had a goal maybe five years ago, but 10 years ago, I didn't have that goal. And so those that are listening that came to the beauty world and you're not quite sure what to do and you want to navigate through it.
[00:08:36] I say always manifesting and setting small goals for yourself and then big picture goals. And I can't even tell you how proud I am of all of my colleagues in the industry that they are achieving all of the things that they wanted to do. Sometimes it takes you 10 years. Sometimes it takes you five.
[00:08:54] Sometimes it takes you one. It really just depends on how you focus on it, whether it's daily or weekly, monthly, and. And having somebody to hold you accountable that maybe as a mentor, or is somebody that you look up to. And Julie is interesting because one of the questions I know that we were going to go over is what is a question that I get asked the most frequently.
[00:09:17] Julie: [00:09:17] Yeah.
[00:09:18] Jaclyn: [00:09:18] And that's the question you asked me is what I get asked most frequently. How the heck did you end up where you are? And it's like, Oh geez. I don't even know where to begin. I don't even know how to answer that. But. This happened just yesterday and that's why I'm going to bring it up because it's quite good timing.
[00:09:36] I went to go set up a spot for a display and the owner kind of connected me with this girl, Maddie. And she is a young aesthetician. She definitely has some passion for makeup. And when she met me, she said, I want to be you. When I grow up, I want w you have a dream job. And I just, I thought to myself, Wow.
[00:09:56] That's really amazing to hear. And I thank you. And I said, why do you say that? And she said, because you have all these different things that you're doing, and I want to do a lot. I want to be involved in a lot. And that's something that like, she recognized that she wanted at, in, I think she's in her early twenties and I said, That's why you're going to go wherever you want to go.
[00:10:20] And I looked her dead in the eye and I said, you will achieve those dreams. You will. And you're already on your path by connecting with the right people to get you there. They connected with those people. They're going to help you and lift you up just like people did for me. When and people still do for me, just like we do all for each other.
[00:10:38] Julie: [00:10:38] Right. Yeah. I love that. I love it.
[00:10:42] Jaclyn: [00:10:42] Yeah.
[00:10:42] Julie: [00:10:42] A great question for people to ask and it's always, I feel like encouraging to young professionals because they say like, I want to be you when I grow up. Right. And encouraging to them that they don't have to be stuck as just an aesthetician if they don't want to be.
[00:11:02] Not that I'm saying it's being stuck, but that they have so many different roads that they can travel. And nothing limits them. I mean, people go off into brows and lashes and medical and so many different ways and doing so many different things. And I think that's great for our younger generations to know that it's not like, I don't know about your parents, but my parents that worked in the same job for 40 years now.
[00:11:33] And I feel like in my generation, it's. Kind of when we started to make that shift people not staying in the same job for 40 years, that my mom didn't understand. And I mean, my husband's about to retire. From a job that he has been at for his going into his 37 year and sometimes feel like vagabond, that I am always interested in trying something new and growing.
[00:12:00] And, but I do think that it was I'll say my generation, cause I know I'm older than you are, but we'll say our generation, that started generation that started to make that shift in. Then I think about your daughter, my granddaughter, who you're seeing that you don't have to be boxed into something, that you can do all the things that you're passionate about.
[00:12:26] Jaclyn: [00:12:26] Absolutely. And I was just talking about this. Somebody over the past couple of days is just even big picture, like you were saying about your husband and what has happened. I think especially over the past couple of years is. Specifically during pandemic is there has been a shift. And I have seen as petitions, even during a pandemic that may have been sort of feeling stuck in a fog that they work, or maybe just a number, whatever they were feeling.
[00:12:57] And it was great for the time being, they made their money. They gained their experience even during a pandemic. And now is the right time. To kind of think about what do I want out of life? What is going to make me be happy in the morning to go to work and do what it is. And I saw so many opening up their own businesses and maybe they're starting small and that's wonderful, but they're on a path and they put the first step forward too.
[00:13:24] To do what they want to do to plan their future, to plan their branding, to put themselves out there, to build up what they want to do and to work towards their dreams. And I don't know if it was just a universal shift that happened because pandemic freaked us all out in different ways, but it forced us to kind of put a mirror up and think.
[00:13:46] Do I want do, what am I happy doing? What I'm doing? And because the fun industry, in my opinion has just, like you said, to echo that so many options from the business end of it, to the training end to your treatment room and being niche, and even the retail part there are. It really is limitless. And again, it can be intertwined into many different things.
[00:14:12] And so I think now is the time to evaluate and write down what are the things I want out of this industry and what am I going to give back while I'm doing it along the way? Just like we all do we continue to feed the industry right. So that the next generation can really we're educating clients and can really build on that so that we might be like the European markets someday.
[00:14:36] That skincare is just a natural lifestyle for everyone every day. And that it, you know what I'm saying? Like it's a spin back. So what I learned in Italy, and I remember leaving there and that is why I teach my 13 year old daughter about skincare. And every night she says, okay, mama, I'm going to do my skincare.
[00:14:55] And she puts her headband on and she does her whole thing. And I'm like, yes, I wish that I knew that then. And I want to get that out. Right. So I hope that starts to shift because I would love to be, to see that happen for us in the United States. For sure.
[00:15:13] Julie: [00:15:13] Yeah. And that, we weren't like 16 and using like say knives
[00:15:19] or the stride x pads, you know what I mean?
[00:15:26] Yes absolutely, like, it's
[00:15:28] Jaclyn: [00:15:28] amazing how this has shifted and we have a lot ways to go, but I'm seeing the change and I'm loving the change because I feel like skincare body care. There really should be part of anyone's daily life. And I hope for that. And then that gives us all jobs security, no matter what we're doing in our lives, in this industry.
[00:15:53] Julie: [00:15:53] Yeah. I think you nail, like you hit the nail right on the head. Is that for whatever reason, if it's like a cosmic shift or it posts. Pandemic shift, whatever it is. I think people are acknowledging the importance of health self care, more than ever. And yes, that our industry has. So much opportunity, because for so long, there's still so many people that have never been to a spawn.
[00:16:21] They still maybe not have been a spa yet because States are really just starting to think about getting back to some sense of normalcy, but they're not opposed to it. When you say, have you been to a spa? They don't say, Oh, no, that's extravagant. Or, no, I've never had a facial. Because I think so many people know now through all of this, that self care needs to be top priority for our wellbeing, both physically, mentally.
[00:16:54] And I think that the shift is just beginning and we're going to see it really boost business in our spas. So it's exciting because. This is what we've wished for our entire careers I would just love when somebody would come in and never been to the spa and win them over. And I still want to win everyone over.
[00:17:17] That's never been to a spa, make them now spa goers.
[00:17:22] Jaclyn: [00:17:22] Yeah, absolutely. And it's true. Not a luxury thing anymore. We've been saying this for years in our industry. So getting that word out there to consumers, to have them feel welcomed and make it part of a life style is amazing. And I speak so much to the next generation because one that's our clients.
[00:17:43] So my 13 year old daughter, I don't know when she'll decide if she wants to get lashes or when she graduates high school or goes to college and all of that, like those girls are now learning now what they're going to want to do when they start to have the means. And when they start to work and take care of themselves and what will be important to them for beauty and that's different for everyone.
[00:18:05] But now the seeds are being planted in that generation. That will be our client for a long time. I hope that it is. With true beauty in a clean, sustainable way. And that we are able to have access to all different walks of life and people, because I feel like everyone should be taking care of themselves that way.
[00:18:27] So I that's what I hope for. Yeah, absolutely.
[00:18:30] Julie: [00:18:30] Absolutely. Everyone should have access to self care and the things that are really important. Tell me a little bit about is there anything that you wish you had known when you started your career that you know now?
[00:18:50] Jaclyn: [00:18:50] Ooh, that is a good one. So. There was, there were times that.
[00:18:59] I think I was 18 or 19 when I started that sales job. I liked to travel at that point, but I don't necessarily think I took full advantage everywhere. I could have gone in everything I could have gone to. And then there were times that I guess back, I wish I did do a little bit more when I was younger and didn't have.
[00:19:21]All of the things that I need to be home for. So I probably would have traveled a little bit more even for my job at that point. And then what's interesting is a few years ago I was traveling for a company and I was definitely gone from home too much. And it's almost like, I wouldn't say they're regrets, but it's really interesting.
[00:19:40] And. In the industry, those opportunities are always going to be there. It's almost like I wish I had a crystal ball or that I could, we all do that. I could know that, like, I didn't have to be on a plane every two weeks for that, the job that I had taken, that I was traveling too much in a way from my daughter, but that I maybe could have.
[00:20:01] Had the state at that point that I would have had that job or opportunity four years down the road when she graduates from high school and she's in college. And so making the right choices for your position at the time to know that these opportunities are going to come and they're going to flow in and out of our lives because this industry is always going to be growing.
[00:20:24] There's always going to be jobs in it. And I think I took it thinking, Ooh, I might never get this chance again. And that's thinking,
[00:20:31]That like, of course there's going to be opportunity. It just has to be the right time for you. Can't force it. And so if I had known. All of those things, maybe I would have, maybe held back a little bit and then, done them at different times in my life. But you can't really regret because it brings you to where you are and who you are.
[00:20:51] But those that are listening that are just getting into the industry, or maybe even thinking about. Shifting from the treatment room into sales or business. It's something that I get DM'd all the time asking, like, how did you get into sales or whatever it is. And I share my story. I share that I traveled in that.
[00:21:12] Really took a chance and I didn't start it full time. I slowly transitioned myself out of the treatment room and I give advice about that because it's something hard to jump right into. And I feel like that's a lesson I could teach others to, how do you get into it? How do you transitioned from thought into business and but expect to travel?
[00:21:34] Cause I feel like that's really where I gained all my experience.
[00:21:39] Julie: [00:21:39] Yeah, exactly. What do they say to everything? There is a season, right? When it's the right time and we're open, the opportunities. Somehow appear and just, we have to keep having faith and working towards our goals. And sometimes we don't even know what they are and what they will be, but something appears.
[00:22:04] And you're like, yeah, I didn't think about that. And I feel really good about it. And I'm going to give it a try. Absolutely. And to know that. There will always be options. And that we do have the choice, especially in this industry. That's always promising and promising to hear for those out there.
[00:22:21] Absolutely. So Jacqueline, over your 20 plus year career and our industry. Tell me about your greatest resource, what you would consider one of your greatest resources and how it has helped you.
[00:22:40] Jaclyn: [00:22:40] So I've thought about this question and I feel like the. Textbook answer would be associations. We've been connected to whether it's I spa or SpaHive or Nasin pro or even, Katherine Heinz Institute.
[00:22:57] But I also really think the best resources are people. So. Not just one thing. It's the people that I've seen are the most successful are the most connected people. And what I mean by that is as I watched those that were successful and I wouldn't say want a mimic, but wanted to. Learn from, they all say life is about showing up life is about this industry is about, talking to people, learning from people, liking people, liking to spend time with people.
[00:23:32] And like that is the resource that is like on job training right there, real life stuff. And I feel like you can put it all into a presentation from a public speaker, inspirational person, but truly it's the daily stuff that makes an impact that just kind of gets that momentum going. And those are the things that stick with you.
[00:23:55]So I would really say the biggest resources bought directors, bond managers, the owners of the spas, and, hearing what. Businesses like ours for them on a daily basis and how they grow and get creative and really stay afloat all the time. And even aestheticians to that might be sole proprietors or whatever it might be.
[00:24:15] Like, I always ask, like, what are you up to? What are you doing? And I've always done that. So I'd say. People are the biggest resource. I can't nail down one specific thing.
[00:24:25]Julie: [00:24:25] You'd be surprised that has overwhelmingly Ben people's response on our podcast. I try to ask the same question to a lot of industry people and whether it's someone in our industry, it could be some of my guests from the social media marketing realm.
[00:24:45] It doesn't matter. They all in one way or another say people through have been their greatest resource throughout their career. And so when you said it just made me smile a little, because I love that answer. Like that is my favorite answer, but I know you have other good resources that you can share with our listeners.
[00:25:11] So tell me. Have you read any inspirational books recently that you would want to share with our audience and also give a shout out to your own book?
[00:25:25] Jaclyn: [00:25:25] Yeah, absolutely. So I read a book that was called useful belief and it's by Chris Helder H E L D E R. And I first learned about it because I started to follow some of his Ted talks and it's not necessarily the messaging of positive thinking and the typical piece.
[00:25:51] It's useful belief. It's about what our moral compass is and utilizing information that we gather every day from people it's been back to that the greatest resource. And, utilizing what we're learning from people that, that is power, that is knowledge and how we make it work for ourselves and others around us to make the community stronger.
[00:26:18] And, it's almost like building blocks of these tasks or these thought process is the mindset and that everything that we. Have that is positive or life is a useful belief in our end. So that touched me and it's not an industry driven book. It just, it was a quick read. I liked his energy when I've seen him speak and digital platform, I recommend it highly.
[00:26:45] My book. I thank you. So I wrote a book in 2019, it was published. It was called successful selling in the beauty industry can buy it on the noble.com and Amazon, I kept hearing from those bond managers and the owner is, how come I can't sell? How come what are we doing wrong? Or what can we do better?
[00:27:03] And I want to get the needle to move. And so. With all of the sales trainings I ever did and learning from others at the same time, I put it all together in a book and it, it's been very helpful as a vendor as well, to tap into some of those selling tips and yeah. To kind of integrate that into when I do trainings for a Nica or for really anything that I'm trying to help teach people self, because it could be relevant to any industry.
[00:27:32] So it's been a journey and it's been really fun to launch the book and get such great supportive feedback from my peers. And that was that's. That's been pretty amazing.
[00:27:44] Julie: [00:27:44] That's great. And in the show notes, we'll put a link to get Jaclyn's book as well as where we'll share some of Jaclyn's other resources.
[00:27:55] And we've had Jaclyn on as an educator for SpaHive VIP's. And our high of hindsight is 2020 education series that we did last year during the pandemic. And trust me, you want Jaclyn's advice and she's an expert on education and sales and can definitely help you boost sales for your spa and for your team and help.
[00:28:23] Encourage them and give them the tools that they need to sell slash educate their clients. And it's really about education over selling because the people that come into our spas want to buy from us. And so I encourage you to check that out also, Jaclyn, because we're a podcast. I always like to see if there's any podcasts that any of our guests are listening to, that they recommend our audience checking out.
[00:28:57] Are you listening to anything good these days?
[00:28:59] Jaclyn: [00:28:59] So I love this question too, because I think this can change based on mood or what you feel is needs a little growth in your life and I've, and that kind of shifts, but it depends like in the beginning of the year, I might've been listening to something different than what I am now, and it's still ties to kind of sales in a way too, but I.
[00:29:24] Have been listening to Rachel Hollis. And I recently listened to a podcast that she did about spring cleaning. And she mentioned a personality test that is like beyond a Myers-Briggs or what not, is a little bit more current. And I thought that it was really valuable because it can be used for your personal life.
[00:29:45] It can be used for your professional life and also can be used . Identifying when you have a client and you're really trying to get the best response out of them when it comes to commitment or making there, be that kind of click in a natural way, sort of understanding why people do what they do.
[00:30:04] And again, in thought like that's kind of biology. It's what makes someone buy or what makes someone connect to something specific? So I loved the podcast that she recently did. That was spring cleaning. And I learned a lot from that one. And then there's a life coach. Her name is Stephanie Lynn. And.
[00:30:24] It's a lot more of a lesson on boundaries and that's something that I think we all sometimes overextend ourselves. So I love that she teaches healthy boundaries and I love listening to her when I'm tired. And I feel like maybe I can't do everything and it's okay to say no and picking and choosing and.
[00:30:47] So I've really loved her. And I've sent that to a lot of my friends that I felt would appreciate the suggestion. So maybe it'll impact some of you up there.
[00:30:57] Julie: [00:30:57] Yeah. Those are some great suggestions. I haven't heard of Stephanie Lynn. So I'm going to definitely check her out. I've gotten some really good podcasts.
[00:31:09] Suggestions from our guests that I really enjoyed, in the morning when I take my walk and I can kind of clear my head and, I am so grateful for you sharing the things that you've enjoyed and that have inspired you recently. So thank you so much. So my last question and time flies. So fast here when we're chatting and I know we could chat for hours and like go off course and talk about a ton of different things.
[00:31:42] But my last question would be, if you could give out one piece of invaluable advice to our listeners, and I feel like you've already given out several pieces of invaluable advice, but. What would be the advice that you would give to our listeners
[00:32:01] Jaclyn: [00:32:01] is to dream big. Don't think small, because none of us are small or that we have this life to live it, and do what you feel, do what you dream about doing it is achievable and it can't happen.
[00:32:16] And so if you really put your heart into it, Anything is possible. And so I try to teach that to my daughter every day and we have a goal we can make it happen and don't give up on it.
[00:32:30] Julie: [00:32:30] I love it. Thank you so much. That's so inspirational. And, I was thinking earlier about a quote that I love, which is it takes 20 years to become an overnight success.
[00:32:43]Exactly. There is, it's kind of like getting struck by lightning or hitting the lottery, the quote unquote overnight success stories. And the truth is that people have put in, a lot of hard work and have gone through a lot of. Failures to come to their successes. So Jaclyn I'm so glad that you could join us today and shared, a glimpse into your journey in the spa and wellness industry.
[00:33:17] And as always, it was amazing to chat with you.
[00:33:22] Jaclyn: [00:33:22] Thank you. Thank you so much. I appreciate your support and I'll speak for everyone. Appreciate what you're doing to put this out there because. It really is amazing. And like you said, we're listening to this when we're taking our walk and clearing our heads, that we're part of daily life and you're making an impact.
[00:33:40] So this is awesome. Awesome to be part of. Thank you, Julie.
