Episode Transcription

Hey guys, it's me and Julie again, and I'm so excited to be here for our SpaHive podcast. Welcome. I want to tell you a little bit about what's going on. I haven't done a long solo episode in about, I feel like a month. And so we're due for a solo episode. Now on Friday, I talked about how we have to just commit our time plan and be consistent, be successful and get things done today.

[00:00:42] I want to talk about what's new with me and JM Pankey Partners. So I had planned to launch this really great episode today with an amazing guests because all of our guests have been totally amazing. And then next week, bring you my solo episode, but because my really amazing guests decided to cancel at the last minute on me for understandable reasons.

[00:01:14]I decided to bring you this really amazing episode a week early. So like we said done is better than perfect. I'm coming to you live again from my car, because like you, I am so scheduled out and so, so busy that sometimes it's hard to dedicate the hour to prepare. And record your podcasts. So I was thinking about it last night and did a little bit of preparation and wanted to tell you about something new and exciting, actually, to new and exciting things that I'm working on.

[00:01:56] So give you an inside, look into my schedule, my work schedule. Oh my gosh. My life schedule, that would be three really exciting things. And hopefully it will help you. So I think that it's fun to find out what Julie Pankey the seven figure Spa consultant is working on both professionally and personally.

[00:02:25] So let's start with professionally. I signed a major contract about two weeks ago. With a big hotel group in a new England Sydney. So I'm still not divulging all of the information soon though, very soon. And that you'll hear more to reopen their spa. So their spa has been closed since the pandemic hit last March.

[00:02:56]They decided not to open last summer when a lot of the other spas and hotels are opening when their hotel opened, they decided to wait. They also thought about, is the spa the right thing for their business? Is it just an amenity that doesn't make any money or could it be truly successful? So fast forward to.

[00:03:20]March, April, 2021, and the really progressive, super ambitious with amazing, amazing, great ideas. General manager took the step to reopen their spa because he knows that this spa could be truly, truly successful. That's where I come in. I met the general manager. We both together had a lot of synergy and some really amazing ideas.

[00:03:58] I believe that this spa located in a hotel in a new England city could be new England. First and only urban wellness retreat spa.  It's so, so exciting. So I decided to take on this project and I'm going to tell you being in the operation again, after a year is exciting. Oh, it has ignited my passion.

[00:04:29] Now keep in mind. There's no people and no guests, right? I'm hiring employees. From scratch. So it's mostly me, myself and I was lots of interviewing and lots of brainstorming. So who doesn't love that. Right. But the team at this hotel is so amazing. They're so behind because the growth of this entity  more than I've ever seen at any other hotel that I worked with.

[00:04:57]So it keeps me really engaged and super jazzed to keep going. Now over the last week I've been interviewing for employees, some amazing and probably out of our budget, but we'll see some didn't show up or showed up in body. But maybe not in mind and spirit. Can you relate to that? I bet you can. So putting together a really great team that can start from the ground up, that's willing to invest in your business and help you grow is key.

[00:05:40] That is my number one priority because as good as my ideas are, as good as your ideas are. You cannot take action and implement without a really strong team, because they're the ones that will be doing the services and making sure the guests are satisfied on a day to day basis. first and foremost, second, I'm working on a compensation model.

[00:06:11] Trying to find the compensation model that. Won't break the bank, but we'll also excite this core group of people that I'm looking to bring in to grow with this business.I can't tell you yet what our compensation model will be because I'm still plugging it into spreadsheets and working financial models to see what I can make.

[00:06:41]So the very most exciting offer for new employees that will also promote profitability. So right now I'm looking at a hybrid model. Again, maybe we do a podcast just on compensation. Would you like that? I know in our SpaHive, VIP talk. And we talked about this a few weeks ago on the podcast. Compensation is such a hot topic.

[00:07:12] So when I'm going to change a compensation model and I'm looking to change this compensation model, although everyone will be new hires, I do a competitive analysis.

[00:07:26]My team, namely Marianne. And I do a very, very detailed competitive analysis. We look at things like Facebook reviews, Yahoo reviews, Google reviews. I want to get the best sense of what other spas in the area are doing. Doing our SWOT analysis. Remember, we've talked about SWAT analysis. I want to know what their strengths and weaknesses are so that I can create a really strong business that builds on their strengths and capitalizes on what their weaknesses are.

[00:08:13]Then we do a survey and that takes quite a while. When we're interviewing it's super helpful because I can find out what other places are paying. But we find out the compensation model and we see if there are trends in the particular city. Are there all booth renters? Are they straight commission?

[00:08:34] Are they hourly so that we can create a really strong compensation models that will interest the best providers in the area, but still allow us to be profitable. So that's my next thing. I've been working on compensation models. So those are some things that I've been working on over the last few weeks, super excited to revamp this treatment menu.

[00:09:03] We already have our primary skincare line that the spa brought in about a year ago that I'm not going to change because we have so much inventory of this and. I'll be honest, it's a great line. And even more than it being a great line, because there are so many good lines out there. They have amazing support.

[00:09:29] And that's what I look for. I feel like brands have amazing products and then they have meh. Okay. Products. Right. You can find. The dead dogs of any brand and the superstars, what really sets a brand apart to me when you're considering bringing it into your spa, as I am now is the strength of the vendor partnership.

[00:09:57] And again, I know I've said this before, but I'm living it firsthand again right now with you. So does the vendor offer. Regular education incentives shares on social media that they're really invested in the success of your business. Now, this vendor who we won't reveal quite yet has been a SpaHive sponsors.

[00:10:25] So you know that I love them. And more than anything, I love the people behind the brand. They supported us in the SpaHive. And the SpaHive in person events. And I know that they will be an amazing support to this spa grand opening.  I know that they will be an amazing asset to this spas, grand opening and beyond.

[00:10:53]So I've been hiring planning. Thinking of my compensation model and writing the treatment menu, or I'm not into writing the treatment menu yet. I'm looking at the old menu I'm looking at where it needs some tweaks, right? People don't want confusing the spa menu. If you go into a PDF spa menu on your website and it's 22 pages long it's too long.

[00:11:27]If you go in and you have your PDF spawn menu on your website, and it's 12 pages long it's too long, people want simple. I'm finding right now people want something that is going to make them feel good. That gives them a way to have consistent self care and is easy and simple to navigate you. Can't be everything to everyone.

[00:11:59] You can't be unorganic new age

[00:12:03]

[00:12:03] You can't be everything to everyone. There is no way for you to offer every type of service out there. I want you just like what I'm doing right now to think about. What is the mission and vision of your spa? I'm going to give you an example of Alison. I hope she doesn't mind, but she is one of our SpaHive board members.

[00:12:33] She's been in the industry for over 30 years. I'm not going to date her. And she has a spa in Massachusetts, a spa that they're doubling the space of. During the pandemic. And COVID a spa that is truly successful in her market. We were talking about this the other day and she said, I can bring in all kinds of machines I could do HydraFacial I could do oxygen facials.

[00:13:04] I can do any of those things. And would they be really successful in my spa? Maybe, maybe not, but I've built my business on the mission of providing exceptional service and care, using our hands and skills to their optimal ability and the best products that I can find in the industry. If it's not broke, don't fix it.

[00:13:33] So Alison, although she's doubling the size of her facility is not going outside her comfort zone. She's staying true to the mission and vision of her spa. And she created it over four years ago and I commend her for that. And that is one of the things that makes her truly successful knowing. That her spa cannot be everything to everybody.

[00:14:03] It can be the best of itself. Reminds me of a quote that I love. I don't know it verbatim, but there's no competition when you stay in your own lane. So remember, what is the vision and mission of your spot and stay true to that. So I am creating this new vision and mission. For this urban wellness retreat based on exactly what we are an urban wellness retreat located in a major city of new England and what we will offer.

[00:14:40]I'll share it with you once I write it, I'm not there yet either. So that's a glimpse of what I've been up to and I'm in the trenches, just like you are. And as I go through this process, I am going to share with you the successes that I find that I think will benefit you. And also the challenges that I have faced that I could share with you so that you don't have to reinvent the wheel and you can be set up for success.

[00:15:13]That's number one. What Julie's been working on over the last few weeks. Number two, I am so excited if you're a SpaHive VIP member, or if you're not, you need to know about our new membership portal. Yes, this is a content vault created specifically for the SpaHive, VIP members. So if you don't know about SpaHive, VIP, head on over to our website, www dot spa, hive.com, search spa, VIP, and it will tell you all about.

[00:15:59] Our SpaHive VIP program, which is the industry's only online elite professional business community dedicated just to spas, hospitality, professionals, and wellness professionals. In that VIP community, you get access to me for one-on-one and group coaching. You also get access to my board members who together have over 500 years of collective business experience in our industry.

[00:16:37] And so many other benefits group coaching, monthly mastermind calls. Biweekly master classes with experts in the industry and outside the industry. But now there's going to be an amazing new benefit. And this is a vault of content. Everything that I have created over the last 28 years doing interviews.

[00:17:09] No problem. We've got interview questions that can help you weed out the superstars from the dead dogs, not to insult anyone writing new treatments. I have a great spreadsheet on what to consider.

[00:17:27] When you're creating new treatments, scheduling your monthly one-on-ones that we talked about, I've got a template for how to conduct a monthly one-on-one and make it super successful. Every tool that I have used over my 20 years of experience as a leader in our industry, and that I'm using now, as I'm developing this new concept and re.

[00:17:57] Grand opening of our new urban wellness retreat is in that content vault. And you as a SpaHive, VIP  will have access to it. So I've been working on that as well because every module has videos. I mean, the content existed, but for me, just to throw out all this content with words and no video to help take you through each module.

[00:18:28] Would be super redundant. And I know you, you would be bored out of your skull. So I've been doing endless videos so that I can launch this amazing portal for you. The one other thing I've been working on over the last few weeks, Is we're selling our house. So personally I am working on a new project trying to launch a new portal, our content vault, and on Wednesday, our house will hit the market.

[00:19:03]I'm telling you all this because I want you to know that I am you. I am super ambitious. I'm an entrepreneur by heart, but I accept that I can't do everything and do it well. Now I know that I have three big things on my plate. As soon as I get my house listed on Wednesday, that will come off my plate at least because we've been cleaning and throwing away.

[00:19:33] I mean, when you live in a house for 20 years with. A mother who lives with you and two adult stepchildren, thus stuff, accumulates, right.

[00:19:46]I'm being kind and gentle on myself. I'm accepting that I can't do everything and I'm doing what I can really well. And I want this to be a lesson to you. We can't do everything all at once. We can do it all and we can have it all and I can help you get there by listening to this weekly podcast. I hope that I inspire you.

[00:20:11] Same with my guests who are amazing. And my board members by following us on the SpaHive on Facebook. I also hope that we can inspire you and.

[00:20:23]By being a member of the SpaHive, VIP, my goal is to inspire you daily, weekly, monthly, so that you can achieve your goals. And my number one tip to you is yes, you can have it all and I can help you have it all, but we can't have it all at once. So we have to pick and choose and we have to do what we do really well.

[00:20:50] And so I wanted to invite you in to the SpaHive, into the life of me. If you don't know me, Julie Pankey, the seven figure spa consultant. So, you know that I'm with you every step of the way. Thanks joining us today. And I hope to see you again real, real soon. Live in the SpaHive either here on our podcast, over on Facebook, or set up a free call to learn more about the SpaHive, VIP.
